Monday Something: Caffeine – An Epilogue

About a year ago, I posted a story about my caffeine addiction. See, caffeine didn’t affect me or bother me when I was younger, but as I get older, I get more sensitive to the stuff. I used to drink a couple cans of diet Pepsi a day, and the included caffeine was enough to feed my addiction, but if I ever missed a day, I’d sure feel it.

Well, the clock continues to march on and I am still getting older, even though I thought I’d try to make a deal with the man upstairs, I guess a repose on my trek through this life isn’t  an option. I got tired of caffeine headaches, so I decided I needed a change.

About a month ago, my wife left town for a week, and I had to work from home to be available for the kiddos. Well, I took this opportunity to ditch my caffeine habit. I took a lot of excedrine to push through the headaches that came on. after about three days, the constant pounding in my temples subsided and I felt I had won.

I have remained caffeine free for the last month with no adverse effects. See, caffeine was never a stimulant for me. I don’t need it to stay awake during the day or to wake up in the morning. It’s just something that’s included in convenient soft drinks. It’s actually harder to find the caffeine free versions. For instance, I was at the store the other day and they were having a great sale on Pepsi products: 3 for $10. But, the store only ever stocks 2 cases of caffeine free diet Pepsi at a time, so if I want to take advantage of the sale, I’d have to buy the caffeinated version. So, they lost my money.

Anyhow, I wanted to include a note to let the world know I am caffeine free, and it wasn’t hard. I will probably allow myself an occasional caffeinated beverage, like when I’m out to lunch or dinner, but at home, we’re caffeine free.

Well, almost. I have a 13 year old daughter who is completely addicted to Dr. Pepper, and if you think it’s hard to find caffeine free diet Pepsi, it’s even harder to find caffeine free Dr. Pepper, but we’re working on it, and hope to be a caffeine free household soon.

Cheers!
